How much does livery cost?
How livery is priced, what pushes the price up or down, and the hidden costs to add when you compare yards.
Livery prices depend most on the type of livery, then on where the yard is (land near towns and in the south-east costs more) and on the facilities. Our cost pages show the figures yards publish, county by county, worked out from their own price lists.
Weekly or monthly?
Many yards quote by the week, others by the month. To compare them, multiply a weekly price by 52 and divide by 12 (so £50 a week is about £217 a month, not £200). Every price on this site is shown both as the yard publishes it and as a monthly figure.
What pushes the price up
- More of the work done by the yard (full costs much more than DIY). - Indoor school, floodlit arena, horse walker, all-year turnout. - Hay, haylage and bedding included. - Being close to a large town.
Costs on top of livery
Livery is only part of keeping a horse. Budget separately for: - Hay or haylage and bedding, if not included. - Hard feed and supplements. - Farrier, usually every five to eight weeks. - Routine vet costs: vaccinations, teeth, worm counts. - Insurance. - Extras the yard charges for: turning out, bringing in, rug changes, holding for the farrier.
Comparing like with like
Two "part livery" prices can't be compared until you know what each includes. Each yard page on this site has a "what's included" table: a tick means the yard says it's included, a cross that it isn't, and a dash that it hasn't said.
